Broly

A Saiyan of immense power, exiled as an infant, who finds a path from rage to friendship.

Broly is a powerful Saiyan who first appeared in the 2018 film *Dragon Ball Super: Broly*. He is the son of Paragus and was exiled as an infant to the planetoid Vampa by King Vegeta, who feared Broly's power level, which greatly exceeded that of his own son, Vegeta. Broly was raised on Vampa by his father, who sought revenge against King Vegeta. Decades later, Broly and Paragus were rescued from Vampa by Frieza Force soldiers Cheelai and Lemo and brought to Frieza, who enlisted them to defeat Goku and Vegeta. On Earth, Broly's increasing power and adaptive fighting abilities allowed him to seemingly beat Vegeta in his Base, Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan God forms, and later overwhelm both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. After Frieza killed Paragus to awaken Broly's latent Super Saiyan powers, a fully mindless Broly attacked until Cheelai and Lemo used the Dragon Balls to wish him safely back to Vampa. Some time later, Goku visited Vampa to provide supplies and expressed his intent to spar with Broly and help teach him to control his power, formally introducing himself and telling Broly to call him by his birth name, Kakarot.

Lore & Background

Broly was born on Planet Vegeta in Age 732. When King Vegeta discovered that the infant Broly's power level greatly exceeded that of his own son, Vegeta, he exiled Broly to the distant planetoid Vampa, hoping the infant would die. Broly's father Paragus attempted to rescue him, but the ship he stole was damaged beyond repair on entry to Vampa. Stuck there, Paragus raised his son to exact revenge on King Vegeta. Forty-three years later, in age 780, Broly and Paragus were rescued from Vampa by Cheelai and Lemo, two low-class Frieza Force soldiers on a recruitment mission. They were brought to Frieza and enlisted to defeat Goku and Vegeta. Cheelai stole the remote Paragus used to keep Broly submissive and broke it before the two groups crossed paths on Earth. During the battle, Frieza covertly killed Paragus to awaken Broly's latent Super Saiyan powers. The fully mindless Broly overwhelmed both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms before being directed to attack Frieza. After Cheelai and Lemo used the Dragon Balls to wish Broly safely back to Vampa, Goku later arrived there to provide supplies and express his intent to spar with Broly and help teach him to control his power, formally introducing himself and telling Broly to call him by his birth name, Kakarot.

In Their Own Story

The air on Vampa was thin and cold. Broly, raised there by his father Paragus after being exiled as an infant, knew only survival and his father's desire for revenge against King Vegeta. When a ship descended and Cheelai and Lemo stepped out, Broly's life changed. They rescued him and Paragus, bringing them to Frieza. On Earth, Broly's power grew with every moment of combat. He beat Vegeta in his Base, Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan God forms. He fought Goku in his Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan God, and Super Saiyan Blue forms, gaining more strength even as Goku gained the advantage. When Frieza killed Paragus, Broly's latent Super Saiyan powers awakened, and he became fully mindless, overwhelming both Goku and Vegeta. He attacked Frieza, then Golden Frieza, and even Whis. But Cheelai and Lemo, who had formed a friendship with Broly, summoned Shenron and wished him safely back to Vampa. Later, Goku arrived on Vampa with supplies, formally introduced himself, and told Broly to call him by his birth name, Kakarot, expressing his intent to spar and help Broly control his power.

Reader's Guide

Broly's origin is rooted in tragedy. Born on Planet Vegeta with a power level that greatly exceeded that of Prince Vegeta, he was exiled as an infant to the planetoid Vampa by King Vegeta. His father Paragus, who attempted to rescue him, became stranded there and raised Broly to seek revenge. Broly grew up isolated, developing immense strength through survival but lacking formal combat training. His key relationships define his arc: initially bound by fear to Paragus, he later finds genuine connection with Cheelai and Lemo, who befriend him and ultimately save his life by using the Dragon Balls to wish him back to Vampa. After the battle, Goku visits Broly on Vampa, offering supplies and friendship, and expresses his intent to spar with Broly and help him learn to control his power. Broly's primary transformation is the Super Saiyan form, which he achieves after Frieza kills Paragus. In this fully mindless state, he overwhelms both Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan Blue forms. Later, under Goku's guidance, Broly may learn to control his immense power.
